A new range of banknotes will be put into circulation by Institut d'émission d'outre-mer (IEOM) as from 20 January 2014, in French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna, in order to progressively replace the current banknotes which, for some of them, are over forty years of age.
These banknotes will be more convenient since they are more compact. They contain a whole array of security signs. While the size and visuals of the notes change, their face value does not. There will be the same denominations, i.e. XPF 500; 1,000; 5,000 and 10,000. Identical and common to the three territories, each note is distinguishable by a dominant colour in various tones and symbols reflecting the riches of the ecological, plant, animal, artistic and cultural local heritage with a “Caledonian” side, a “Polynesian” side, and Wallisian and Futunian signs on each side. The features are as follows: green and flora for the XPF 500 note; orange-beige and terrestrial fauna for the XPF 1,000 note; blue and aquatic world for the XPF 5,000 note; red and architecture and traditional objects for the XPF 10,000 note.
