International Women’s Day recalls the stories of all these ordinary women who made History. It has its roots in the struggle led by women for centuries to take part in society on an equal footing with men. The feminist movement, strengthened by four World Conference on Women organised by the UN, helped make the celebration of that day the converging point of coordinated efforts to demand the achievement of women’s rights and their participation in the political and economic life.
Over the years, the action taken by the UN for the promotion of women has followed four specific guidelines:
• promotion of legal measures;
• mobilisation of public opinion and
international action;
• training and research;
• direct assistance to disadvantaged groups.
Today, one of the major principles in the organisation of the UN’s works is that “no durable solution to the most pressing social, economic and political problems of the society may be found without the full participation and empowerment of women around the whole world”.
The Post and Telecommunications Office is pleased to present a new series of two postage stamps, paying homage to the women of our country.
