Long ago Hina lived in a district today known as
Mataiea. Her father was the chief of that district.
When she turned 16, her father decided that she
would marry the King of Lake Vaihiria. When
Hina was introduced to her promised husband,
she got scared when she saw that huge and
magnificent eel: the Royal Eel of Lake Vaihiria.
Horrified, she ran away across the mountains
to seek refuge at her best friend’s place, the
fisherman. She told him her terrible story and
asked him to protect her. But both of them knew
that sooner or later the eel would eventually
find them. So Hina’s friend asked her to give him
locks of her hair in order to tie them to a hook.
As planned, the eel got attracted by the shine of
the young girl’s hair, got close and bit the hook.
At that very moment, the fisherman grabbed an
ax and cut its head off. Hina, relieved, took the
eel’s head and proceeded to her district. After a
few hours’ walk, she got thirsty and stopped by
a stream. She laid the eel’s head on a stone and
decided to go swimming. When she returned,
the head had disappeared. A bit farther, she
found it, fixed onto the ground, covered with
young golden shoots and light palms. The head
had grown into an unknown tree, now called
“coconut tree”. Hina stayed by the side of the
young tree and waited for the first fruits to
appear: the coconuts.
