Crabs are of the order decapoda or decapods, which represent an important part of the large crustaceans group. Unlike land crabs you can find up to several hundred metres above sea level, marine crabs are present in all the stages of the oceanic slope, from coral reef flats to the deepest abyssal depths of the ocean.
In French Polynesia, marine crabs come in many sizes, shapes and colours. Polynesian fishermen and divers are familiar with these animals. Over 300 species are currently listed within our five archipelagos and perhaps more in the next few years.
Of the reef crabs, the four we are presenting today are carnivorous. Most of them venture out at night, and crawl all over for feeding. Despite their hard shell, they are vulnerable, a favourite for morays and labres; they never wander too far from their shelter.
Some species are hunted for the delicacy of their flesh and fishing subjected to strict regulation. On the other hand, there are others that are toxic and therefore never hunted nor consumed.
Papeete Post Office is proud to introduce you to the wealth of our Polynesian islands fauna with these stamps.
