Scented postage stamp: Orchids
Orchids of Tahiti, like other major plant families of our islands, mostly come from abroad.
Thanks to a very favourable climate, our fenua is the perfect land for orchids, which can be found in many of our gardens.
The “Orchid of Tahiti” denomination simply indicates the ones that have been adopted by many local orchid lovers. We can find original species but also hybrids (i.e. crossing between species and between genera).
In French Polynesia, there are some thirty local species, which are sometimes endemic. They nevertheless are threatened and most of them are very fragile.
In the world it is considered that there are more than 30,000 orchid species. They have specific biological characteristics, which make them very special flowers: 80% are fragrant and last longer than other flowers, even cut ones.
Through the eighth issuance of a scented postage stamp it is a real pleasure for the Post and Telecommunications Office to introduce this refined and elegant flower, source of wonder and fascination!
