Marquesas Islands
After taking possession of the Marquesas Islands in 1842, Chief Commodore Dupetit-Thouars, appointed Lieutenant Commander Collet, as Commander of the island of Nuku Hiva, the main island of the North Island Group (today: Nuku Hiva).

Considering the ongoing tribal disputes, the first concern of the Commander was to ensure the security of the garrison; so he had a fort built on one of the hills at the edge of Taiohae Bay at a location called “Madisonville”, a former compound built by American Commodore David Porter thirty years before. That fort, which can be seen from afar, was named “Fort Collet” (named after the Commander but mainly after his father, an Admiral). For many years, the fort was going to be the subject of many reproductions. It should be specified that at that time, navy officers had intensive drawing classes as part of their training, and were thus able to accurately reproduce characters, objects and landscapes.
The engraving represented here is not signed but bears the date 1854 and must therefore be rather close to the original layout of the fort and its annexes.
