In Polynesia, dance is an ancestral tradition. Each festive event and each moment of life is celebrated by a specific dance. Dances are both men’s and women’s business. They are accompanied by traditional instruments, especially the ukulele (small guitar) and the pahu (big drum).
Every July, especially in Tahiti and Bora Bora, the HEIVA takes place. This is an opportunity to see beautiful shows featuring the greatest dance troupes and the best dancers.
Today there are specialised dance schools and they are now officially acknowledged.
Various types of dance are taught: The ote’a is a rapid dance conducted by drums. It emphasizes hips movements. The aparima rather focuses on hand movements; it mimics the lyrics on a melody of guitars and ukuleles.
The hivinau is a very joyful and festive dance; male and female dancers place themselves in concentric circles revolving in opposite directions. As to the paoa, this dance relies on the dialogue between bodies.
