International Women´s Day A Polynesian legend
Before the arrival of Europeans, the Hamuta valley, in Pirae, on the island of Tahiti, was the cradle of an exceptional woman. She was born into a family of the island of Fakarava, in the Tuamotu islands. Because of her glorious feats and her outstanding powers she became Ari’i (Queen) of the Nohovao clan. As she always had a fan in her hand, with which she directed the various winds and turned them into allies, in order to defend her people from attacks from enemy clans, she was nicknamed “the Lady with a Fan”, Tahiri Vahine. Also famous for her exquisite beauty, Tahiri Vahine rose above her human condition and gained the status of a hero, seeking peace, harmony with Nature, animals and all the elements. She thus became a model for Polynesian women of all times.
P. PELTIER

Philippe Peltier was born in Nantes, on 11 March 1955. In his teen years, it was the (black and white) film Tabu that made him fall passionately in love with Polynesia. Twelve years later Philippe was finally able to make his dream come true: he settled in Tahiti in October 1982. Living off his painting (on clothes) for more than eight years, he came to faith through the testimony of Polynesians and converted himself. His conversion was so strong that he abandoned everything (except his artistic gifts!) and got involved in the Religious Congregation of the Sacred Hearts in 1994. He lives in the Mother Community, in Pirae, Tahiti, where he has taught painting and drawing since 1992, in the Association for Young Disabled Adults, Ture-ma, in Papenoo. In 2007, he met an employee of the Centre for Educational Research (CRDP), who asked him to illustrate booklets and albums, including the legend of Tafai. The municipality of Pirae, which had seen his various illustrations then contacted him to illustrate the life of a female hero of that location, Tahiri Vahine, a historical figure who became a legend over time. This book is made available to students at the end of primary education and beginning of secondary education, but also to the general public. Philippe is preparing an exhibition of naive paintings for the end of May, in a gallery of Papeete.
