EPJ Journée de la femme
"International Women's Rights Day", recognized in France since 1982, originated in early 20th century
women's demonstrations in Europe and the United States, calling for better working conditions and the
right to vote.
During the International Women's Year in 1975, the United Nations began celebrating International
Women's Day on March 8th. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution
proclaiming the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace, recognizing the
important role of women in peace and development efforts.

March 8 is a day of gatherings around the world and an opportunity to take stock of the situation of
women. Traditionally, activist women's groups and associations are organizing events around the world
to celebrate their victories and achievements, to voice their demands and to improve the situation of women.
It is also an opportunity to mobilize for the rights of women and their participation in political and
economic life, including in French Polynesia.

As in 2006, the work chosen to evoke this day devoted to women is a painting by the Caledonian painter
Pascale TAURUA. Miss New Caledonia in 1977 and Miss France in 1978, very quickly the celebrity all in pomp weighs on her, she returned her crown after six months. She finally devotes herself to her true passion: painting.Polynesian father and Caledonian mother of European strain, she grew up in a mixed cultural background, divided between Caledonia and Polynesia. She studied Gauguin's work at the Conservatoire des Arts
of Papeete, mounts his first exhibition, and in 1986 won the the prize of the Art competition organized by
The Rotary Club in Nouméa.

The Polynesian Post invites you to discover through this issue a flowery and shimmering "vahine", created
by this artist installed today in the south of France, but still fed by Pacific influences.
