JOIN ISSUE WITH SPM HAWAIKI NUI EX LANGLADE
As we are surrounded by water, the seaway remains
the preferred transportation in the economic life
of islanders, whether in the northern or southern
hemisphere. It is this similarity that the archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and French Polynesia have in common.

On the occasion of the 73rd Autumn exposition in Paris, Fare Rata the French Polynesia Post Office, had the honour of producing a joint issue on the ship «Langlade» now renamed the «Hawaiki Nui» in collaboration with the Territorial Council and the
head of post office from Saint-Pierre et Miquelon.
Formerly a ro-ro vessel, commonly known as the
Ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off meaning roll-in, roll-out), the «Langlade» provided cargo and passenger service in the archipelago Saint Pierre-et-Miquelon from the 1980s, connecting Saint-Pierre and Canada.
Then he sailed near Canadian waters under the name of «Northern Cruiser» before being bought in the late 1990s to sail in the tropical lagoons of French Polynesia under the current name «Hawaiki Nui».

Owned by the Société de Navigation Polynésienne (SPN), the «Hawaiki Nui» transports goods and passengers between the capital of Papeete and the Leeward Islands twice a week. Repainted in blue lagoon, it has a crucial role to limit the opening up of the islands, allowing the supply at a lower cost than the air service. Illustrated by Patrick Dérible, a native of this small part of France and known for having produced for the post office of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon many stamps of ships almost all engraved made, the stamp and its sheet present the ship in the center, surrounded by a side of the ice of the far north facing our beaches and coconut trees.

The issue was engraved by Mr Pierre Barra, a great
figure in philatelic world.

Fare Rata, the French Polynesia post office, is pleased to retrace this beautiful sailing history in collaboration with our friends from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and will see you at autumn exposition in Paris, next November.
