FDC 40th anniversary of the death of Joe DASSIN
Joseph Ira DASSIN, known as Joe DASSIN, was born in the USA (New York) on November 5, 1938 and died on August 20, 1980 in Papeete. The most American of French singers, will spend his adolescence to travel the United States and Europe alongside his father filmmaker Jules DASSIN.

His career, which began in 1965, was marked by many successes not only in France, but in many countries. Joe DASSIN has sold more than 50 million records worldwide through 13 albums. He has performed hundreds of songs, many of which were in foreign languages (Spanish, German, Italian, Greek and Japanese). Hard-working, he also writes songs for such friends as France Gall and Carlos.

Of its successes we always hum the most mythical ones like "L’été indien", "Guantanamera", "Daltons", "Siffler sur la colline", "L’Amérique", "The Champs Elysées", "Les petits pains du chocolat". In the early 1970s, Joe DASSIN’s songs will be at the top of the charts. It was in 1972 that this seductive singer first arrived in Tahiti, on the advice of his friend Carlos in love with our fish-bearing waters. Tahiti and its islands quickly became the Eden of Joe DASSIN and he bought a large
property in Tahaa island.

After having made a long tour in Europe, he decides to come to rest in Tahiti but on August 20, 1980, while he had lunch with his family and friends in the restaurant Chez Michel et Éliane (on the 1st floor of the Vaima center), at 12:30 pm, he is ill, collapses and dies of a heart attack. Joe DASSIN now rests at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

To illustrate this philatelic program we collaborated with the children of Joe DASSIN, Julien and Jonathan DASSIN, who chose this beautiful portrait of their father. We thank them for that.
Fare Rata, the Polynesian Post Office, pays tribute to this great star of music whose Polynesians have kept in memory the man of heart who knew how to make Polynesia vibrate.
