This certainly must be one of the best places to find Polynesian authenticity. The "Mapuru a Paraita" Market is a real attraction. At the Market, the city is still living to the rhythm of the languid years, those years where the Tahitian people opened up to the world, being proud of its customs, rich in its unparalleled sense of hospitality and simply enjoying life.
The Market is always busy. The busiest moment is every morning from 6 to 8 AM. That wonderful, vibrant and emotion-packed living space is the historical, cultural and – most of all – social heart of Papeete.
The people who work in the Market converge from the remote districts of Tahiti to this strategic place, the heart and soul of Tahitian social life. The market was renovated ten years ago, after one hundred years of good and loyal service. The new architecture has widely preserved the atmosphere and the charm of yesterday, featuring various colourful stands and handicraft stalls. The Market, boasting 7,000 m², presents visitors with a thorough
insight into typical Polynesian daily life.
The Papeete Market is certainly one of the oldest institutions still operating on the island. Around 1850, a decree provided for the creation of two markets in Papeete. On was intended for fish and the other one for fruits, vegetables, poultry, etc. It was only in 1869 when the Market was actually set up at its current location.
In 1987, the first part of the new Market –as we know it today - was inaugurated with great pomp. The surface area was multiplied by three and the addition of handicraft booths upstairs created a good atmosphere and attracted more people. Actually, each year the Market of Papeete accommodates 500,000 visitors.
