Children`s christmas

Withdrawn   Three senior students at the Pomare IV High School came up with an original idea for a children's Christmas postage stamp that they proposed to the French Polynesia Postal and Telecommunications Office.

Tropical Tahiti and Her Islands are not exactly the places to find a snowman or traditional Christmas trees. But what these islands do offer is a rich flora that provides an abundance of greenery, flowers and fruits that can be easily used to create an authentic local observance.

A coconut tree, thus, serves as a Christmas tree. A "umete" (Tahitian bowl) filled with colorful and decorative objects achieves the same objective as a pair of shoes in front of a fireplace.

Then there is the "tiki," carved either from wood or stone, that can easily be transformed into a local version of Santa Claus with a red and white cap.

This postage stamp and "first day" envelope are the result of a mixing of drawings by Laïza Pautehea, Florida Soufet and Maïma Tching Chi Yen.
